Recently I had a pair of client conversations where they mentioned that a ‘social media expert’ said Google+ is “it” and my clients should put all their eggs in that basket.
I responded, ‘Really?’
I doubted everything I read in the last year about the unacknowledged downfall of Google+ because some expert said something different.
I somehow doubted the benefit of being based in San Francisco in the very heart of the tech world. Where you have your finger on the pulse whether you like it or not, whether you understand it or not.
But as-per-usual, a simple Google search provided enough verifiable evidence to completely discredit this person’s claims:
In short, the leadership left Google almost 10 months ago. Google significantly ignored Google+ during their subsequent developer conference. The people who devoted a lot of man-hours to the project are dissing it. There hasn’t been any significant news about it in the second half of last year.
I’m not advocating another social network or incredibly anti-Google+ … I do really advocate reading the tea leaves and fact-checking.
Moral of the Story
Vet your sources. Vet your experts.
What are they trying to sell you?
It doesn’t take much.
Even us. Especially us. We’d really appreciate not laying an egg like this guy.
